My name is Lily Frain. I wish I could explain to you "how" to write, but to write the unspoken rules of literature would in fact be destroying one of writing's fundamental secrets. Perhaps less of a secret, in fact, than an underground network of those who can access the infatuating liberties of understanding the depth of words. The most I could reveal to you is a personal anecdote or a piece of advice to help you on your path. When writing, one must understand every possible word that fits in the sentence you're trying to create. The connection between words is the connection between you and your reader. There are always multiple ways to write every sentence, and a writer is the person who can distinguish the most powerful way to convey the words. For example, "Yesterday I was swimming when the sun set over the dock," is one way to say it. However, this sentence doesn't really resonate. A writer would know there are thousands of possibilities to explain the moment. One could be, "Tendrils of sunlight peeking through oak leaves grazed my body as I dipped beneath the surface of water." This is, in my mind, the most important rule of writing. To SHOW the reader what is happening, to project an image or situation through detailed description and profound examination.

    figure, Alice.

My second favorite piece is "Renee Stout Ekphrastic". This poem is an ekphrastic piece based on an artwork by Renee Stout. The art piece was a caged heart, outlined into a human torso by silver pieces of metal. My Ekphrastic piece shows its story, all told frmo the perspective of the art. It talks about being jealous of the soul filled humans who can walk and talk and live for real. I would love to go further with this poem, maybe have it fall in love with a human or something.
My third favorite piece is "Short Story Draft One". I have a full story written and uploaded under "Max and Addie". This story is about the life of two young children who are best friends, but very lost. They have a secret world in their treehouse. Both are beginning to age, and hitting the naive early stages of puberty as Max begins to feel for Addie. This is a story of rebellion, youth, hope, bad parenting, and all together the view of the world from a twelve year old's eyes.

Good writers steal, not copy.don't cheat, they steal.
My work "Copy/Change Poem" illustrates this rule since I changed a poem to be my own.

    2. This

    MY HEAD.
These stories are not real life. Don't talk about them in real life.

    4. No work is ever finished.
Seriously. Read Short Story Draft One. That's certainly not done.
    4. If you're satisfied, destroy it.
Always. I've done BlackOut like eight times.
    5. Don't lie to your readers.
Even though these stories aren't real, don't lie. Don't lie TO yourself, or the readers.
    6. There are 1,001 ways to say things.
Try Everything. Taste the possibilities. Discover ranges of vocabulary.
    7. Ice cream, giggles, dancing, unicorns, rainbow, teenage angst, and magic are not acceptable.
Don't ever write about one, it is law.
    8. Your story is always true.
    Except in real life.
    9. Reread. Rewrite. Repeat.
This is a weird thing called editing.
    10. Keep dreaming, always.

    Journal Entry: Vocal Impressions
    Cher-
Nashville's Miley Cyrus in the backwoods. Voice like a river over rocks. Something like the theme song for an adult comedy like the "Grown-ups." Red solo cups of moonshine.
    Samuel L. Jackson-
The opinionated philosopher, the Hitler-man. Small man syndrome goodness wrapped in holy water and the preachers halo. A disguise worht of the devil. New Orleanian Hood shop regular, human teeth around his neck.
    Jack Nickelson-
The knowing noose in the upstairs attic. The worn heart, the atlas soul. His brain was rubbed raw as the sole of his size 11 shoes, scuffed with nightmares and trudged though contimplation. The man who watched his sister die. The man who does not know his mouth is full of holes, and his soul is exposed. Beating, struggling and heroic in it's modesty. The man who weeps for fate.
    Sean O'Connery-
    The yellow-suit fisherman.
The glowering security camera on a reality T.V. show.
The man in rehab for an addiction to grief.

this quality. Because it is a short poem and has a rhyme scheme, detailed illustration is difficult. However, this is why it takes effort to show and not tell. The poem begins "Alice in a blue dress" seems very bland. This line, if you read between the lines, this is a reference to the story Alice in Wonderland. Alice always wore a baby blue dress, illustrating her innocence. The poem goes on to follow Alice's brief life, describing Alice's short childhood, commitment to an asylum, and death. In the form of a child-like jingle the poem warns people of a haunting figure, Alice.

my blog.work "3DSP Final Draft" or "Alice in Underland" illustrates this quality.

    Alice,

    Alice,
    I must confess,
you're far too in love with these tales.
I'm afraid your train's run off the rails.
    ...
no, the Mad Hatter is NOT serving tea for two.
I found you a home now don't fight
    You'll be in Wonderland tonight.
This cot is your bed these shackles may hurt
but in a few years it will all be a blur.
    Sixteen years have gone
and sunlight is hidden far beyond
    the people are leaving
and your heart is still beating.
    You want it to end-
your mind is something they can't mend.
You've given this cold life truce,
met Death with a rope and noose.
    Alice wandering,
    Alice pondering,
    Alice in the chains
    Alice with the broken brain,
She wanders the halls out of habit,
    searching for the white rabbit,
And because you've been such a kind host,
I'll warn you of this less than friendly ghost-
Spiteful for her life she's full of malice,
    so pleeeaasee...
watch out for dear old Alice.
