1. Good writers don't cheat, they steal.
My work "Copy/Change Poem" illustrates this rule since I changed a poem to be my own.
2. This is a story, IN MY HEAD.
These stories are not real life. Don't talk about them in real life.
4. No work is ever finished.
Seriously. Read Short Story Draft One. That's certainly not done.
4. If you're satisfied, destroy it.
Always. I've done BlackOut like eight times.
5. Don't lie to your readers.
Even though these stories aren't real, don't lie. Don't lie TO yourself, or the readers.
6. There are 1,001 ways to say things.
Try Everything. Taste the possibilities. Discover ranges of vocabulary.
7. Ice cream, giggles, dancing, unicorns, rainbow, teenage angst, and magic are not acceptable.
Don't ever write about one, it is law.
8. Your story is always true.
Except in real life.
9. Reread. Rewrite. Repeat.
This is a weird thing called editing.
10. Keep dreaming, always.
:).
